Unfortunately it is not a secret that many of the broken homes in America can be located in low income housing in urban sprawls throughout America. Ghettos, Hoods, Projects, Parks or whatever the popular term in the community is these places are filled with single mothers and a majority of them are of African American descent. So where have all the men gone? There are those who would have you to believe that black males just abandon their children and they are genetically prone to father multiple children with multiple woman and then just disappear.
This is definitely not the case. Michelle Alexander explains in her book “The New Jim Crow” just how the systematic incarceration of Americans, minorities specifically, has affected the minority household. The war on drugs has been utilized to fill American prisons with minority men, sentencing disparities have not only been proven through statistical data, they continue to exist to date. These tactics applied by the criminal justice system not only help to destroy the foundation of minority households, they perpetuate the continued incarceration of minority males which further diminishes the family unit in these communities.
Although this is not the only factor that leads to single family homes in minority communities it is a major factor that is constantly overlooked. Many people believe that if you do the crime you should do the time. This would hold true if the sentencing were even across the board. Also if race was not a significant factor when it came to convictions and sentencing guide lines. In low income minority communities it seems that not only is the offender being punished, woman and children of the community are being punished as well. Forced to raise children on their own in impoverished neighborhoods were crime is just as high as the unemployment rate and children run around without positive role models.
